Was BULLSHIT.

Although their drummer had a set of the coolest cymbals I've ever seen.

I have to throw some respect Ringo and Paul's way for not dragging us and the Beatles rep through the same thing.

Nice mention of Ringo, since the drummer apparently was Zac Starkey.

They just looked old.  One thing I saw mentioned was that 3 of the songs they played are theme songs for CSI shows on CBS, so maybe the whole thing was an elaborate promo for the CSI franchise.

It was bad.  I knew it would be bad.  Dude cannot sing at all anymore.  They should stop.  If they're gonna go old school, why couldn't they get Page or someone else cool from the 70s instead?

Just because their ability to bring it in their sixties is somewhat compromised doesn't mean you aren't dead effing wrong to dismiss the Who's entire body of work.

This is only true if their entire body of work is better than what we saw in the Superbowl.

Which is debatable.

Somewhat compromised?  Really?

Besides, I'll dismiss them all I want, with no regret.  I've said it before, and I'll say it again...while I think that they were under-rated as musicians (and their overall abilities), it's because they were over-rated regarding their songs...which just plain sucked.  And it showed last night.  Were the songs better, even a poor performance of them would've been more tolerable than that steaming pile of shite I just saw yesterday.  They may have ruined it for all other 'classic rock' bands to perform at the half-time show.  Can't blame the NFL if they choose to bring in more current artists from this point on, after seeing that.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion, Lorenzo, yet a strong percentage of The Who's catalog contains stronger / better songs than what you're forced to cover in Concentual.

Don't be an idiot.

Look, I'm not a The Who fan either...  they never really did it for me and the songs aren't my thing.  Still, there is no question in my mind that they are a legendary band Who had a very long and successful career.  There is no question that their songs are beloved by many and that they are well-written.  There is no question that their late bassist was an amazing player.  Their late drummer Keith Moon is a fasincating figure in rock history and was himself an interesting player and outstanding showman.  No question Townhend is an amazing performer too- few people commend a stage like that guy.

The NFL didn't screw the pooch by booking The Who- they screwed the pooch by not doing it 25 years ago.  Trotting them out on stage now that they are all elderly is pretty much just a nod to a legendary rock band too little too late.  They are too old to do what they do, half of them are dead, and they are a shadow of what they once were.

It's just a shame.  I don't mind any of the songs they played, but the performance was shoddy.  They wrote some cool tunes and used to put on impressive live performances.  It's pretty obvious that Roger can't sing anymore and that's sad even though I'm not a huge Who lover.

Let's just try to grasp the subtle nuances that differentiate "they're not my thing" and "they're objectively terrible" in this particular instance (their body of work, not last night's performance.)

Or as Ether more concisely put it:

And I question whether a crowd of non-musicians would agree with our assessment of how terrible they were.  No worse, certainly, than Carrie Underwood - love her or hate her, she was missing notes all over the place.  And she doesn't have age as an excuse.

Whatever.

Art's subjective.  There are LOTS of people who would challenge the notion that Nickelback sucks.  Or Kenny G.

But they do too.

That's just stupid, and I am very upset that you would say such a thing.  Very, very upset.

Kenny G has won many awards and sold many albums.  He is a pioneer in holding the mouthpiece of a saxophone on the side of his mouth, rather than the traditional front of the mouth, whilst playing.
And he set a world record for holding a single note for nearly an hour, which required him to both blow, and suck, at the same time.

You, sir, have offended me by not recognizing that Kenny G is an exceptional artist.  And I am very, very upset by this.

The Who in 1970 = kick ass!

But that was 40 years and 2 dead guys ago.

Which is absolutely the goal.  What I don't get is why so many people rank Pete so high up the charts when it comes to guitar playing.  You'd expect him to have one memorable riff since he's the stuff of legend and all.

SugarDaddy

My 9th grade daughter had three 9th grade friends over watching the game last night.  One of the girls pretty much summed up the performance for me: "Yay! Old people!"

The half time performance was basically met with snickers and giggles in this house.  And two "ohmigosh! I have that on my iPod!"s

I've heard rumors that the NFL is going with the "classic rock" set because they tend to be more safe than current acts.  No risk of a Nipplegate with The Who.

I am the thread killer.

Precisely my point.

To trot these 2 guys out and still be calling it The Who is such a farce. And yeah, I dig some of their stuff. But none of the feeling is there anymore.

I know.  My sarcasm button's not working.  I'm really not trying to fire people up.  (Well, I am but I'm not all mean-spirited about it.)  Just looking for someone to explain what's so great about him or his band.
